Gerard Royland returns from college in Germany to take over as master of his family estate at Trimley Deen. He falls in love with Cristel Toller, the daughter of one of his tenants, but things take a turn when a mysterious deaf lodger is also discovered to be after Cristel. Several strange events follow in Royland's life from there on.
